AI (Artificial Intelligence) is having a major impact on hiring — both for employers and job seekers. Here are a few of the most common ways AI is affecting the process (for better and worse):
For Employers
1. Faster Hiring
PRO: AI automates tasks like resume review, interview scheduling, and even skill assessments, cutting time-to-hire significantly.
CON: Candidates may not know they’re being evaluated by AI or how decisions are made, leading to an unpleasant and complicated application process.
2. Predictive Analytics
PRO: AI can assess candidates based on past hires and performance data to predict job success.
CON: Some candidates may be disadvantaged by an automated process compared to a human-to-human, conversation type interview. An example that is currently raising concerns would be in the case of neurodivergent applicants struggling with video interview AI.
For Job Seekers
1. AI Screening and Resume Filtering
PRO: ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) now use AI to scan resumes for keywords, experience, and qualifications, aiming to shorten application times.
CON: If your resume isn't optimized for the specific job description, it may never be accepted or seen by a human, regardless of your qualification.
2. Bias — Improved or Worsened?
PRO: AI can reduce human bias in screening if well-designed.
CON: If AI is trained on biased data, it can reinforce discrimination (e.g., favoring male candidates or certain universities).
AI is making hiring faster and more data-driven, but it’s also increasing the pressure on candidates to play by the algorithm’s rules. Knowing how to optimize your application for AI is quickly becoming essential, as that may be just as important as your actual qualifications.
Good Luck, and Happy Hunting!
